Your child wants to grow a garden. You have the location picked out and have brought home prepackaged potting soil for a container, or dug organic soil into a planting bed outside - but what comes next? Now it's time to pick plants easy enough for your child to grow without the disappointment that comes with choosing beautiful, but delicate plants... and then seeing them wither away instead of prospering.

First-time gardeners may show no rhyme or reason in picking their plants, and there is no reason to expect more from kids. The array of plants on the market is overwhelming even for the most seasoned gardener. Before you help your kids choose, think about the kind of garden you want - is it a sensory garden for a child with challenges, an exotic Halloween garden, or even a butterfly garden or a terrarium? Choose your child's tools wisely, pick the plants that fit his or her needs, and start gardening.

With every posy or three-sisters grouping, you may be planting the seeds of a life-long love of plants in your child.

The KidGardener Planting Book For Parents edition by Chris Eirschele Children eBooks Reviews

Just finished reading this book. If you have kids- and want to help them stretch in new areas, this is a must read! Unexpected, but a favorite part of the book to kids is counting the spots on a ladybug. In my family, we have had a fear of bugs... but now I am understanding that fear is caused by simply not understanding (the bugs). When you talk about them in advance, and give the children something to do when they encounter the bugs, the fear moves to interest.

When we planted the fairly garden.... the garden tools were invented. A spoon was a trowel, our garden shears were scissors and our rake was a fork. Such a great use of imagination. Then every day, the kids would want to reuse the garden tools... as they played in the fairy gardens. Matchbox cars have come to live ( and sometimes be buried) in the Fairy Gardens. Plus combining a few different areas of the book... we planted a spicy oregano in one of the fairy gardens. We make a focaccia bread using the spicy oregano on top. The kids love picking the oregano and helping to make the bread.

Gift this book to someone with children that you adore. They will forever adore you!.

From the book “Big people, as well as little people, get trapped in the perfection of growing a garden All the rows neat, all the plants straight and tall, and no holes in their leaves. But perfection is never achieved in gardening….”

Boy, was I ever glad to read that paragraph. Because even though I'm often accused of being a perfectionist, I really am not one—typographical-error-hunting aside (I'm an editor; it's what I do). This book, like most, does have some typos at the time of this writing, but it’s well worth overlooking them and benefiting from the wonderful ideas. My gardens have never been perfect, though some have been prolific, producing enough food to supply most of my family's needs. I've enjoyed gardening with my children all their lives, but this book gave me some ideas I never would have come up with on my own.

Even if you have very little time or money, you can put this book to good use and raise some beautiful plants with your children. I think we'll do a fairy garden next time.
This thoughtful and engaging gardening book is for the child-gardener in all of us. The guide skillfully maneuvers through many of the seemingly predictable mistakes made by adults when imparting the joys of the garden. When so much is said about the topics of home improvement, this book allows the child to learn about gardening stewardship from one very good gardener. I wish I had this masterful book when I was growing up.
