Very practical tips for the emerging or seasoned speaker, who wants to earn a lot more money in the profession. The book as just as much about marketing as about developing a successful speaking career. I particularly liked the 80/20 rule (Paredo Principle) and how that ties into one's effort to get speaking gigs. Also, the need for some kind of CRM database is sound advice.
Don't let the short book length deceive you. Every paragraph packs a strong punch.
Buy this book. Read it. Practice it. The hard work will pay off.
Great practical advice. Benji's style is accessible to readers of all levels, whether you are just starting out or you've been speaking a while. I wanted a book geared toward the marketing end and that is what I got, so I am pleased. He states that listeners are not going to magically know you are a great speaker, so they will base their opinion of you on "social" impression (what they "think" of you, whether true or not). He explains exactly way this is so important to beginning speakers. He also explains how, precisely, to contact each venue, and how to find contact names.
What I dislike, that seems to be epidemic among some self-help books in the business end, is the emphasis on money. Too much money. I'll be happy to get invited to speak for the first time instead of feeling like I have to force myself onto people. And as for payment, I'm on Welfare and all I want is to be able to get off of it. Millions don't really impress me.
I got a random email which led me down a rabbit hole...and like Alice, I found a Wonderland in Benji Bruce. His books is straightforward, no-nonsense, devoid of fluff, and bursting with practical tips. I want to meet Benji and give him a hug or $10,000.00!
Benji style is very easy to read, because he is what I call a conversational writer. He is straight to the point, talks from experience not theory, and he is fun and funny. I strongly recommend to read his book. There are pearls and golden nuggets spread out in the book, that he used and that we will use if we want to grow a successful speaking business.
